            <p id="spar0005">Although the pika from the Moldovan Kalfa locality (early MN10) — representing the oldest European record of Ochotoninae (the clade derived from <italic>Bellatona</italic>) — is of crucial importance to understand the earliest history of <italic>Ochotona</italic>, its taxonomy has remained unclear until now. The paper fills the gap by providing a detailed revision of the type material from Kalfa, originally referred to <italic>Proochotona kalfense</italic>. The analysis is supported by a direct comparison with type materials of <italic>Proochotona eximia</italic>, <italic>Bellatonoides eroli</italic>, and <italic>Ochotona ozansoyi</italic>, the important early ochotonines of the peri-Paratethyan area. The genus <italic>Proochotona</italic> is regarded here as a junior subjective synonym of <italic>Ochotona</italic>. The specie <italic>kalfense</italic> is confirmed to be valid, undoubtedly belonging to the genus <italic>Ochotona</italic>. It demonstrates an occurrence of a surprisingly advanced p3 phenotype already present in the pre-Turolian of Europe. At the Holoarctic scale, a detailed synoptic survey and discussion of the fossil record, taxonomy, and phylogeny of the oldest representatives of Ochotoninae are provided.</p>

Cet article comble cette lacune en fournissant une revue détaillée du matériel type de Kalfa, rapporté à l’origine à <italic>Proochotona kalfense</italic>. L’analyse est corroborée par une comparaison directe avec les matériels types de <italic>Proochotona eximia</italic>, <italic>Bellatonoides eroli</italic> et <italic>Ochootona ozansoyi</italic>, les principaux ochotoninés précoces de la zone péri-paratéthysienne. Le genre <italic>Proochotona</italic> est considéré ici comme un synonyme de sujet juvénile. L’espèce <italic>kalfense</italic> est confirmée comme étant valide, appartenant sans aucun doute au genre <italic>Ochotona</italic>, avec l’occurrence étonnamment avancée d’un phénotype de p3 déjà présent dans le pré-Turolien d’Europe. À l’échelle de l’Holoarctique, un examen synoptique détaillé, ainsi qu’une discussion sur l’enregistrement fossile, la taxonomie et la phylogénie des plus anciens représentants d’Ochootoninés sont ici fournis.</p>

         <title id="sect0025">Introduction</title>
         <p id="par0005">
            <italic>Ochotona</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Link, 1795</xref> represents the sole living genus of the lagomorph family Ochotonidae. The origin of the genus is generally linked to <italic>Bellatona</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1961</xref> known from the Middle Miocene of eastern Asia. Nevertheless, the clade derived from <italic>Bellatona</italic> often comprises taxa with remarkable similarity in general morphology. As a result, the number of recognized genera and/or species throughout this lineage is not stable. In the context of <italic>Ochotona</italic> ancestry, two other genera, both described from the Late Miocene of the peri-Paratethyan area, are mentioned in the literature: the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>, erected by <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Khomenko (1914)</xref> based on the type species <italic>Proochotona eximia</italic> from Tarakliya (Middle Turolian, MN12; MD), and the genus <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>, erected by <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> based on the type species <italic>Bellatonoides eroli</italic> from Sinap Tepe (Locs. 8A and 120; Early Vallesian, MN9; TR). Unfortunately, taxonomy of these genera is still open. Apart from these taxa, <italic>Ochotona ozansoyi</italic> described by <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> from Sinap Tepe (Loc. 84) undoubtedly documents early Late Miocene (Late Vallesian, early MN10) <italic>Ochotona</italic> in that area.</p>
         <p id="par0010">The ochotonid from Kalfa (Late Vallesian, early MN10) represents the earliest European record of Ochotoninae (<italic>sensu</italic>
            <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Čermák, 2010</xref>; discussed also in this paper). The species <italic>kalfense</italic> was originally attributed by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref>, without any discussion of the generic validity, to the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>. Later, <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> showed some morphological similarities between the ochotonid from Kalfa and <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic>, and assigned the former to the genus <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>. At any rate, the taxonomy of the ochotonid species <italic>kalfense</italic> has until now remained unclear. Apart from the original description, no studies have provided detailed data based on direct observation of the type material.</p>
         <p id="par0015">Thus, in the light of the above, the ochotonid from Kalfa is undoubtedly of crucial importance for understanding the earliest history and origination of <italic>Ochotona.</italic> It may also help to clarify the question of taxonomic validity of genera <italic>Bellatonoides</italic> and <italic>Proochotona</italic>. The aim of this paper is to perform:<list>

                  <p id="par0020">a detailed revision and morphometric re-description of original ochotonid material from Kalfa described by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref> including a direct comparative analyses of other important type materials of the region, namely <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic>, <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic>, and <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ozansoyi</italic>;</p>

         <label>2</label>
         <title id="sect0030">Kalfa: geological setting and age attribution</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0035">The locality is situated in a large outcrop about 700 meters northwest of Kalfa [Calfa, Калфа] village (Anenii Noi district, Moldova) on the southern escarpment of the Byk river valley (<xref rid="fig0005" ref-type="fig">Fig. 1</xref>). The remains of small vertebrates come from the alluvial deposits consisting of various limestones and clays with shells of mollusks (e.g., marine <italic>Mactra podolica</italic>, <italic>M. fabreana, Plicatiforma fittoni</italic>, <italic>Solen subfragilis</italic>, <italic>Cerithium comperei</italic> and/or freshwater <italic>Lymnea</italic> sp., <italic>Planorbis</italic> sp.). The small extent and thickness of bone-bearing layers, apparently deposited in a short time, suggest an activity of periodical streams in the vicinity of the Sarmatian river (<xref rid="bib0245" ref-type="bibr">Lungu and Rzebik-Kowalska, 2011</xref>). The most detailed studies of the geology, taphonomy, and age of the locality were provided by <xref rid="bib0225" ref-type="bibr">Lungu, 1978</xref> and <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu, 1981</xref> and <xref rid="bib0245" ref-type="bibr">Lungu and Rzebik-Kowalska (2011)</xref>.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0040">Kalfa has yielded about thirty mammalian taxa (see <xref rid="bib0225" ref-type="bibr">Lungu, 1978</xref>, <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu, 1981</xref>, <xref rid="bib0235" ref-type="bibr">Lungu, 1984</xref>, <xref rid="bib0240" ref-type="bibr">Lungu, 1990</xref> and <xref rid="bib0245" ref-type="bibr">Lungu and Rzebik-Kowalska, 2011</xref> for details), but, apart from ochotonids, small mammals are very scanty and give little information about the mammalian age. The available taxa are comparable to those reported from Buzhor 1 (Khynchesht district) that has yielded a much more diverse small mammal community including a few taxa of high biostratigraphic value. Nevertheless, the exact age of Kalfa and Buzhor 1 still remains unclear. The locality under study was originally referred by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref> to the Middle Sarmatian. In the eastern Paratethys, the Sarmatian stage (<italic>sensu</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0395" ref-type="bibr">Suess, 1866</xref>) is considered to include the Volhynian and (Lower) Bessarabian (<xref rid="bib0360" ref-type="bibr">Simionescu, 1906</xref>) substages; further east to the Caspian Sea, the Sarmatian also includes the Upper Bessarabian and Khersonian (<xref rid="bib0360" ref-type="bibr">Simionescu, 1906</xref>), and is commonly labeled as Sarmatian (s.l.) as proposed by <xref rid="bib0020" ref-type="bibr">Barbot de Marny (1869)</xref>. The Middle Sarmatian corresponds approximately to the Early Vallesian (ca MN9). This age for Kalfa was followed by, e.g., <xref rid="bib0330" ref-type="bibr">Rzebik-Kowalska and Lungu (2009)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0245" ref-type="bibr">Lungu and Rzebik-Kowalska (2011)</xref>, or <xref rid="bib0085" ref-type="bibr">Delinschi (2014)</xref>. On the other hand, <xref rid="bib0420" ref-type="bibr">Topachevski et al. (1997)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0280" ref-type="bibr">Nesin (2004)</xref> refer Kalfa, based on the mammals listed by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref>, tentatively to the Late Vallesian (MN10).</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0045">
               <xref rid="bib0425" ref-type="bibr">Vangengeim et al. (2006)</xref> provided a magnetostratigraphic analysis of Middle Sarmatian deposits in <italic>Hipparion</italic> localities of Moldova and correlated them to an upper part of chron C5An (upper boundary 11.9 Ma) or, less likely, with subchron C5r2n (base 11.5 Ma); it corresponds in their view to the base of the Vallesian. However <xref rid="bib0430" ref-type="bibr">Vasiliev et al. (2011)</xref> question the age by <xref rid="bib0425" ref-type="bibr">Vangengeim et al. (2006)</xref> and argue that it was only based on the correlation of the Khersonian–Meotian boundary to an age of 9.8 Ma and the predominantly normal polarities of the Khersonian to C5n.2n. The new radio-isotopic data by <xref rid="bib0430" ref-type="bibr">Vasiliev et al. (2011)</xref> for the Khersonian–Meotian boundary indicates a correlation of the normal polarity interval of the Khersonian to the younger chron C4An. The reversed intervals with the Bessarabian–Khersonian boundary may consequently correspond to C4Ar. Thus the <italic>Hipparion</italic> sites in Moldova may be significantly younger than suggested by <xref rid="bib0425" ref-type="bibr">Vangengeim et al. (2006)</xref>.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0050">The results of <xref rid="bib0430" ref-type="bibr">Vasiliev et al. (2011)</xref> are in a good agreement with the view of M. Sinitsa (Sinitsa, pers. comm. 2014; <xref rid="bib0375" ref-type="bibr">Sinitsa and Delinschi, in press</xref>) who, based on the presence of at least two murid genera and <italic>Spermophilinus turolensis</italic>, and the absence of <italic>Democricetodon, Megacricetodon</italic>, and <italic>Microtocricetus</italic>, correlate the small mammal faunas of Kalfa and Buzhor 1 with the Late Vallesian (early MN10), thus being younger than those of Götzendorf (AT), Rudabánya (HU), and Gritsev (UA). This correlation seems to be most probable and is followed in this paper.</p>
         </sec>
      </sec>
      <sec id="sec0015">
         <label>3</label>
         <title id="sect0035">Material and methods</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0055">The revision of the species <italic>kalfense</italic> is based on the original material by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref> from the Kalfa type locality (Moldova, early MN10) and the material in France published by <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref>. The studied material is curated in the collections of the TSU (prefix FTGU Lag/Kfa-) and MNHN (prefix MNHN Lag/Kfa-). The interspecific comparisons, using original material (indicated by “*”) or a bibliographical basis (unless otherwise stated, data were taken from original descriptions of species), were made with:<list>

         <sec>
            <p id="par0320">
               <bold>Notes on morphological changes of p3 through ontogeny</bold>: In all prismatic teeth (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>A, A′, D–G, I, I′) of the studied sample, the general occlusal outline is comparable with that of the root, and no important morphological changes are visible. In young individuals, with conical teeth (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>K–N′), the root morphologies — representing a stage that appears with wear in more adult ontogenic phases — differ from the occlusal ones and thus several morphological changes through ontogeny can be traced. The anteroconid displays most changes among all p3 structures. In very young individuals (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>O), i.e. in very early stage of p3 abrasion, the anteroconid is small and almost symmetrical. Through ontogeny, it grows in relative size. In early permanent teeth, both widened and elongated anteroconids can be recognized in the sample; later in the ontogenetic development the anteroconid extends buccally and becomes predominantly more asymmetric. In adult specimens, a degree of anteroconid asymmetry (buccal extension) is very variable in contrast to relatively stable anteroconid length (<xref rid="fig0010" ref-type="fig">Fig. 2</xref>). At any rate, a tendency to anteroconid asymmetry is possible to recognize in all ontogenic stages of permanent teeth. Concave anterior walls of anteroconid generally appear in largely asymmetric anteroconids. Proto- and paraflexid are very variable with no recognizable trends in their morphologies, deflections, and relative lengths (depending on the asymmetry of anteroconid) through ontogeny. The lingual side is predominantly concave (e.g., <xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>B, C), occasionally with incipient mesoflexid (<xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>G); the phenomenon seems not to be related to the age of the individual. The relatively small sample from the type locality does not allow a credible quantification of p3 morphotype composition in <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0325">
               <bold>Comparisons:</bold>
               <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic> differs from all available species of <italic>Bellatona</italic> and from <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic> of Sinap Tepe in its larger size (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>), larger and well-developed p3 anteroconid, and longer and narrower P3 hypoflexus; from the former also in its well-developed p3 proto- and paraflexid and constant presence of posterolingual process in M2. The majority of p3 specimens from Damiao (DM01) referred to by <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> as <italic>Bellatona</italic> cf. <italic>B.</italic> <italic>forsythmajori</italic>, <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic>, and <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> are generally smaller than those in <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic> (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>). Moreover, in contrast to <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>, p3s attributed to (1) <italic>Bellatona</italic> cf. <italic>B.</italic> <italic>forsythmajori</italic> has an incipient or no paraflexid, a smaller anteroconid, and probably an unstable presence of posterolingual process in M2; (2) <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic> has a less developed paraflexid, a wider anteroconid-posteroconid connection, and a shorter and more simple anteroconid; (3) <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> have a more symmetrical anteroconid (developed lingually) and the anteroconid–posteroconid connection is generally narrower. Two p3s from Bulstyn Kudak (MN) are smaller and show similar morphological differences as <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> from DM01. Among the Late Miocene <italic>Ochotona</italic> of the peri-Paratethyan area: (1) <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ozansoyi</italic> has a smaller p3 with the symmetrical anteroconid and narrower anteroconid–posteroconid connection, a more linguo-buccally oriented p3 paraflexid, a shorter and wider P3 hypoflexus, and a slightly longer and thinner posterolingual process in M2; (2) <italic>O. eximia</italic> has a larger and relatively elongated p3 with the symmetrical anteroconid. The Pliocene species of the peri-Paratethyan area, <italic>Ochotona antiqua</italic>, <italic>O.</italic> <italic>mediterranensis</italic>, and <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ursui</italic>, are smaller than <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic> (<xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>). Moreover, in contrast to <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>, <italic>O.</italic> <italic>antiqua</italic> has a more symmetrical p3 anteroconid (if asymmetrical, its lingual part is generally enlarged), a narrower p3 anteroconid–posteroconid connection, a less robust mandible with posterior mental foramen situated more posteriorly, a relatively lower mandibular body (MHL is 69 for <italic>O.</italic> <italic>antiqua</italic> vs. 84 for <italic>O. kalfense</italic>), and a more developed condylar process of mandibular ramus. More detailed comparison with <italic>O.</italic> <italic>mediterranensis</italic> and <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ursui</italic> is impossible due to lack of sufficient published data. This is also true for <italic>O.</italic> <italic>pseudopusilla</italic> (see <xref rid="bib0045" ref-type="bibr">Čermák and Rekovets, 2010</xref> for details). In the peri-Paratethyan area, there are several scanty findings with unsure taxonomic attribution. Their p3 size relationship to those of <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic> is shown in <xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>. From a morphological point of view, in contrast to <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>: (1) <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>ozansoyi</italic> from Inönü (TR) has a narrower p3 anteroconid–posteroconid connection, a smaller symmetrical p3 anteroconid, a shorter and wider P3 hypoflexus, and a more developed mylohyoid line in the mandibular body — from the ventral view situated more medially (positions of the posterior mental foramen and root end of lower incisor in mandibular body are comparable with those of <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>); (2) <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp. from Inönü (Loc. 45; TR) has a p3 with symmetrical anteroconid and developed mesoflexid; (3) <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp. from Razeni (MD) has a p3 with the larger and distinctly more triangular anteroconid, a narrower anteroconid–posteroconid connection, and proto- and paraflexid more parallel to linguo-buccal axis; (4) <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp. from Maritsa I (GR) has a p3 with the symmetrical anteroconid of rhombic outline and narrower anteroconid-posteroconid connection; (5) <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp. from Frunzovka 1 (UA) has a triangular outline of p3 with the prolonged and markedly narrow anteroconid, a shorter and wider posteroconid, and a narrower anteroconid-posteroconid connection with notably more posteriorly oriented proto- and paraflexid; (6) three p3s (all prismatic) from Gradiste (MD) show a noticeable morphological variability making comparison difficult; the p3 varies (i) in the anteroconid from large, symmetrical, and triangular to small, asymmetrical, and rounded, (ii) in the anteroconid-posteroconid connection from narrow to very wide.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0330">
               <bold>Emended diagnosis:</bold> Medium to large-sized p3 with large buccally widened asymmetric anteroconid of semicircular or rectangular buccal outline, often anteriorly depressed, anteroconid-posteroconid junction moderately wide; well-developed proto- and paraflexid without crenulation. Mandibular body robust and high; p3-m2 alveolar row distinctly longer than diastema; posterior mental foramen predominantly below the talonid of m2; mylohyoid line long, moderately developed, from the ventral view in the buccal third of the mandibular body. M2 posteroloph with well-developed posterolingual process.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>

               <bold>Remarks:</bold> The material under study is attributed here to the subfamily Ochotoninae (first unequivocally separated by <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> as the “<italic>Ochotona</italic> group”), a monophyletic lineage derived from <italic>Bellatona</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1961</xref> and comprising here <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref>; <italic>Ochotona</italic>; <italic>Ochotonoma</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 1998</xref>; <italic>Pliolagomys</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Agadjanian and Erbajeva, 1983</xref>; and <italic>Ochotonoides</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0400" ref-type="bibr">Teilhard de Chardin and Young, 1931</xref> (<xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Čermák, 2010</xref>). This subfamily is characterized by the combination of autapomorphies including: (i) the posterolingual process of M2, (ii) well-defined anteroconid with round or more or less triangular outline on p3, and (iii) the presence of the opposite paraflexid and protoflexid on p3 (<xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref>). This subfamily demarcation differs significantly from a taxonomical meaning of Ochotoninae defined by <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1986</xref>, <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1988</xref>, <xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1994</xref>, <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2015</xref> and <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2011</xref> [in earlier works she used the name Lagomyinae <xref rid="bib0200" ref-type="bibr">Lilljeborg, 1866</xref> — see Čermák [2010: 10] for explanation]). In her view Ochotoninae comprises also <italic>Marcuinomys</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Lavocat, 1951</xref>; <italic>Lagopsis</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0335" ref-type="bibr">Schlosser, 1884</xref>; <italic>Albertona</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">López-Martínez, 1986</xref>; <italic>Alloptox</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1961</xref>; and <italic>Paludotona</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0060" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1959</xref> [grouped tentatively here in the separate subfamily Lagopsinae], despite assuming that the subfamily was derived from the <italic>Bellatona</italic> stock (<xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1994</xref> and <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2011</xref>). Moreover, she places <italic>Bellatonoides</italic> — a presumed direct descendant of <italic>Bellatona</italic> and ancestor of <italic>Ochotona</italic> (<xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref> and <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref>) — in different subfamily Sinolagomyinae. Even though the phylogenetic interrelationships among genera of Lagopsinae is still unclear, the phenotypes in the earliest representatives of <italic>Marcuinomys</italic>, <italic>Lagopsis</italic>, or <italic>Alloptox</italic>, all available already in the middle Early Miocene (i.e. MN2–3; <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Daxner-Höck et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Hordijk, 2010</xref>, <xref rid="bib0195" ref-type="bibr">Lavocat, 1951</xref> and <xref rid="bib0415" ref-type="bibr">Tobien, 1963</xref>), are distinctly different from those available in, more or less coeval, the earliest records of <italic>Bellatona</italic>. This strongly indicates that these taxa cannot be derived from the <italic>Bellatona</italic> stock. The present state of knowledge rather supports a hypothesis that <italic>Marciunomys</italic> most likely branched from a European rooted form like <italic>Titanomys</italic> von <xref rid="bib0275" ref-type="bibr">Meyer, 1843</xref> and subsequently gave rise to <italic>Lagopsis</italic> (<xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Hordijk, 2010</xref> and references therein). <italic>Paludotona</italic> has been suggested as a possible descendant of presumed relict population of <italic>Lagopsis</italic> (<xref rid="bib0070" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1967</xref>, <xref rid="bib0175" ref-type="bibr">Hordijk, 2010</xref>, <xref rid="bib0215" ref-type="bibr">López-Martínez, 1986</xref> and <xref rid="bib0220" ref-type="bibr">López-Martínez, 1989</xref>). Phylogenetic affinities of <italic>Albertona</italic> and particularly Asian <italic>Alloptox</italic> are less clear and are need of revision. The subfamily Ochotoninae <italic>sensu</italic> Erbajeva (1994; <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2015</xref> and <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2011</xref>) is not a monopfyletic.</p>
         </sec>
      </sec>

         <label>5</label>
         <title id="sect0050">Results and discussion</title>
         <sec id="sec0035">
            <label>5.1</label>
            <title id="sect0055">Generic attribution of the ochotonid from Kalfa</title>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0340">The species <italic>kalfense</italic> was originally attributed by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref>, without any discussion of the generic validity, to the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>. The genus was erected by <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Khomenko (1914)</xref> based on the type species <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic> (= originally <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximius</italic> in <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Khomenko (1914)</xref> — cf. Article 34.2 of <xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">ICZN (1999)</xref>; = type species designated by monotypy [Article 68.3 of <xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">ICZN, 1999</xref>]) described from the Middle Turolian (MN12) Moldovan Tarakliya locality. The species description fulfills the mandatory conditions of Article 12.1 of <xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">ICZN (1999)</xref>. <italic>Proochotona</italic> was accepted as a valid genus by <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev (1964)</xref> who included in it three other species — <italic>P. gigas</italic> (<xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Argyropulo and Pidoplichka, 1939</xref>); <italic>P.</italic> <italic>kudjukovi</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref>; and <italic>P.</italic> <italic>kirgizica</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref>. <italic>Proochotona</italic> as an independent genus was also accepted by <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Agadjanian and Erbajeva (1983)</xref> as a monospecific genus with <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic> and later by <xref rid="bib0110" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1986</xref>, <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1988</xref> and <xref rid="bib0120" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1994</xref> and <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al. (2015)</xref> as a genus with <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic> and <italic>P.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>. The generic name <italic>Proochotona</italic> was accepted in faunal lists, reviews or in brief descriptions of new material, also in, e.g., <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Schlosser (1924)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Dmitrieva and Nesmeyanov (1982)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Agadjanian and Erbajeva (1983)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0285" ref-type="bibr">Nesin and Nadachowski (2001)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0250" ref-type="bibr">Lungu et al. (2007)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0080" ref-type="bibr">Delinschi (2009)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0370" ref-type="bibr">Sinitsa (2009)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0145" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al. (2011)</xref>, and <xref rid="bib0245" ref-type="bibr">Lungu and Rzebik-Kowalska (2011)</xref>.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0345">The main taxonomic argumentation of <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev (1964</xref>: 223) and Erbajeva (in <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Agadjanian and Erbajeva, 1983</xref>: 67; <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1988</xref>: 71) for generic discrimination was based particularly on (i) the large size, and (ii) the simple p3 anteroconid without flexids (in <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref>) or the very large p3 anteroconid of trilobed configuration, symmetric disposition, and narrow anteroconid–posteroconid junction (in <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Agadjanian and Erbajeva, 1983</xref>, <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1988</xref>). I fully agree with <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> that these characters regarded as diagnostic make <italic>Proochotona</italic> indistinguishable from some species of <italic>Ochotona</italic> (e.g., <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> described by <xref rid="bib0290" ref-type="bibr">Qiu (1987)</xref> from Ertemte 2; cf. <xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref> and <xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>). At any rate, the determinative question is: “Is the type species of <italic>Proochotona</italic> distinct at the generic level?”</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0350">A direct revision of the holotype of <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic> (fragment of left mandibular body with p3-m1, No. 3193, PMONU collections; cf. Khomenko [1914]) shows that its p3 possesses the medium-sized anteroconid of symmetric disposition (proto- and paraflexid are of similar length, without crenulation), anteriorly with depressions. The p3 antero-posteroconid junction is moderately wide, but narrower than in <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic>. The tooth size does not exceed the size range observed in large-sized <italic>Ochotona</italic>, e.g., <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref> and <xref rid="fig0030" ref-type="fig">Fig. 6</xref>) — the well-known species of <italic>Ochotona</italic> from the Late Miocene of East Asia. Thus, taking into account these features of the type species of <italic>Proochotona</italic> (represented by the holotype) and the emended generic diagnosis given by <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva (1988)</xref>, the species <italic>eximia</italic> is referred here to the genus <italic>Ochotona</italic>. Therefore, the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Khomenko, 1914</xref> is regarded here as a junior subjective synonym of <italic>Ochotona</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Link, 1795</xref>; this view was earlier suggested by <xref rid="bib0010" ref-type="bibr">Argyropulo and Pidoplichka (1939)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0290" ref-type="bibr">Qiu (1987)</xref>, <xref rid="bib0345" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 1991</xref>, <xref rid="bib0350" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 1998</xref> and <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref>, and <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Čermák (2010)</xref>.</p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0355">As for other species previously referred to the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>; (i) the species <italic>gigas</italic> was later designated by <xref rid="bib0005" ref-type="bibr">Agadjanian and Erbajeva (1983)</xref> as the type species of a new genus <italic>Pliolagomys.</italic> The taxonomic model of <italic>Pliolagomys</italic> as an independent genus has not been questioned and is accepted in this paper. (ii) The species <italic>kurdjukovi</italic> and <italic>kirgizica</italic> were erected by <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev (1964)</xref> based on fragmentary mandibles originating from the type locality (Article 76.1 of <xref rid="bib0180" ref-type="bibr">ICZN, 1999</xref>) specified in the original description as “the southern bank of the lake Issyk Kul (Kirghizia)” (<xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref>: 224–225). Based on data from <xref rid="bib0095" ref-type="bibr">Dmitrieva and Nesmeyanov (1982</xref>: 97) the original material was most probably collected by Kurdjukov in 1959 from the Late Pliocene [?Early Pleistocene] site of Keklikbulak, the stream near the town of Bokonbayevo. Unfortunately, the species identity of the nominal species-group taxa <italic>P.</italic> <italic>kirgizica</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref> and <italic>P. kurdjukovi</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref> cannot be determined from these name-bearing types (holotypes No. 27553 and 27554; ZIN RAS collections) represented by badly preserved mandibles without p3s. The available large-sized ochotonids allow confident systematic attributions only at the family level Ochotonidae. Thus, in accordance with <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref>, the names <italic>P.</italic> <italic>kirgizica</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref> and <italic>P.</italic> <italic>kurdjukovi</italic>
                  <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref> are regarded here as <italic>nomina dubia.</italic>
               </p>
            </sec>
            <sec>
               <p id="par0360">
                  <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> showed some morphological similarities between the ochotonid from Kalfa and <italic>B</italic>. <italic>eroli</italic> from Sinap Tepe (Locs. 8A and 120; MN9). Based on the rounded labially displaced p3 anteroconid and the shallow p3 paraflexid (cf. <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref>, p. 170, fig. 7.8. D–F), he assigned the former to the genus <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>. Nevertheless, as shown above in “Systematic palaeontology”, the identified cranial and dental features of the Kalfa ochotonid, particularly its large p3 anteroconid without flexids separated by well-developed proto- and paraflexid without crenulation, are typical for the genus <italic>Ochotona</italic> and fully compatible with the emended generic diagnosis given by Erbajeva (1988: 82; cf. <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref>: 226; <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Gromov and Erbajeva, 1995</xref>: 34–35). Thus, the species <italic>kalfense</italic> is referred here to the genus <italic>Ochotona.</italic> At any rate, as shown in “Comparisons”, the Early Vallesian taxon from the Sinap Tepe area strongly differs from <italic>Ochotona</italic> from Kalfa.</p>
            </sec>
         </sec>
         <sec id="sec0040">
            <label>5.2</label>
            <title id="sect0060">Ochotona kalfense in the context of the oldest representatives of Ochotoninae</title>
            <sec id="sec0045">
               <label>5.2.1</label>
               <title id="sect0065">Fossil record</title>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0365">The roots of the Ochotoninae clade can be traced back to <italic>Bellatona</italic>, probably to the <italic>B.</italic> <italic>forsythmajori</italic> stock. <italic>Bellatona</italic> is referred to from the early to the late Late Miocene (ca MN3–late MN7–8, Early Shanwagian–Late Tunggurian) of China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan from localities Gashunyinadege (CN); Yanghi (CN); Tairum Nor, Moergen, and Tamuqin of Tunggur formation (CN); [?]Damiao–DM01 [distinct from a typical <italic>Bellatona</italic>, see bellow], DM02 (CN); [?]Balunhalagen (CN); Ulan-Tologoi (MN); Valley of Lakes — biozones D, D1/1 (MN); and Ashutas (KZ) (<xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Daxner-Höck et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1961</xref>, <xref rid="bib0090" ref-type="bibr">Deng et al., 2007</xref>, <xref rid="bib0105" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1981</xref>, <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 1988</xref>, <xref rid="bib0130" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 2007</xref>, <xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva and Daxner-Höck, 2001</xref>, <xref rid="bib0170" ref-type="bibr">Höck et al., 1999</xref>, <xref rid="bib0270" ref-type="bibr">Meng et al., 1996</xref>, <xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Qiu and Wang, 1999</xref>, <xref rid="bib0305" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-D. et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0310" ref-type="bibr">Qiu et al., 2006</xref>, <xref rid="bib0320" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-X. et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0440" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2009</xref>, <xref rid="bib0450" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2003</xref>, <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref> and <xref rid="bib0470" ref-type="bibr">Zhou, 1988</xref>). Records from Tamuqin and Damiao (DM01, DM02) indicate that the LAD for <italic>Bellatona</italic> seems to be the Late Tunggurian (<xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al., 2015</xref>, <xref rid="bib0305" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-D. et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0310" ref-type="bibr">Qiu et al., 2006</xref>, <xref rid="bib0320" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-X. et al., 2013</xref> and <xref rid="bib0435" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2013</xref>). The presence and exact age of <italic>Bellatona</italic> (and other findings referred to <italic>Ochotona</italic>; <xref rid="bib0440" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al. (2009)</xref>) in Balunhalagen — Late Tunggurian and Early Bahean — are unsure. Findings from the Early Baodean (ca MN12/13) Bilutu locality (CN) referred to by <xref rid="bib0440" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al. (2009)</xref> as <italic>Bellatona</italic> sp. were most probably a product of redeposition from older horizons (<xref rid="bib0305" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-D. et al., 2013</xref>).</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0370">Around the Middle/Late Miocene boundary (MN7–8/MN9, Tunggurian/Bahean), morphologically transitional forms between a typical <italic>Bellatona</italic> and <italic>Ochotona</italic> are reported from Inner Mongolian localities Damiao–DM01 (of similar age or slightly younger than Tamuqin; <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref>, <xref rid="bib0435" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2013</xref>), Balunhalagen, and Amuwusu (<xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Qiu and Wang, 1999</xref>, <xref rid="bib0440" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2009</xref> and <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref>). The lower part of the Balunhalagen bed appears to be coeval with Damiao (DM01), the upper one with Amuwusu (<xref rid="bib0435" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2013</xref>). <xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Qiu and Wang (1999)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0310" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-D. et al. (2006</xref>, <xref rid="bib0305" ref-type="bibr">2013)</xref> exclude explicitly the presence of <italic>Bellatona</italic> in Amuwusu. These findings are considered by <xref rid="bib0310" ref-type="bibr">Qiu et al. (2006)</xref> to be the oldest record of <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>. At any rate, Amuwusu is of similar age as Sinap Tepe–Locs. 8A, 120 (<xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref>; MN9; TR), the type locality of <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic>.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0375">Ochotonids from the basal part of the Bahe Formation — Loc.12, China, Loess Plateau (latest MN9, Early Bahean, 9.95 Ma; <xref rid="bib0315" ref-type="bibr">Qiu et al., 2003</xref> and <xref rid="bib0460" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2013</xref>) — were generally considered as one of the earliest records of <italic>Ochotona</italic> (<xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2015</xref> and <xref rid="bib0460" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2013</xref>). This material is represented by a few specimens and was tentatively referred to <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>O</italic>. <italic>lagreli</italic> (<xref rid="bib0315" ref-type="bibr">Qiu et al., 2003</xref>). A coeval or slightly younger record of <italic>Ochotona</italic> is also referred from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (China) from the Shengou (MN9/10, Early Bahean; <xref rid="bib0295" ref-type="bibr">Qiu and Li, 2008</xref>, <xref rid="bib0435" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2013</xref>, <xref rid="bib0445" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2007</xref> and <xref rid="bib0455" ref-type="bibr">Woodburne et al., 2013</xref>). This locality is of similar age as Sinap Tepe — Loc. 84 (<xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen, 2003</xref>, early MN10; TR), the type locality of <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ozansoyi</italic>. The possible presence of <italic>Ochotona</italic> in Balunhalagen is unclear, but, at any rate, the upper part of Balunhalagen Fm. is coeval with the lower part of Bahe Fm. (<xref rid="bib0435" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al., 2013</xref>). Nevertheless, recently, <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> published undoubted <italic>Ochotona</italic> from Inner Mongolian Damiao locality (DM01). The age attribution of the locality by <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> and <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al. (2015)</xref> pushes back the FAD of <italic>Ochotona</italic> to the late Middle Miocene (12.1 Ma, Late Tunggurian, middle MN7/8). A similar age was suggested by <xref rid="bib0425" ref-type="bibr">Vangengeim et al. (2006)</xref> for Kalfa (see above). <xref rid="bib0125" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 2003</xref>, <xref rid="bib0130" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva, 2007</xref> and <xref rid="bib0135" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva and Daxner-Höck, 2001</xref>) referred <italic>Ochotona</italic> from Builstyn Kudag (Biozone E) of Valley of Lakes (Mongolia). The locality was originally tentatively correlated with the middle Late Miocene (<xref rid="bib0050" ref-type="bibr">Daxner-Höck and Badamgarav, 2007</xref> and <xref rid="bib0170" ref-type="bibr">Höck et al., 1999</xref>), later <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Daxner-Höck et al. (2013)</xref> revised the age to the Early Bahean (<italic>sensu</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0460" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2013</xref>; ca late MN9). But subsequent revisions of rodents by <xref rid="bib0255" ref-type="bibr">Maridet et al., 2014a</xref>, <xref rid="bib0260" ref-type="bibr">Maridet et al., 2014b</xref> and <xref rid="bib0265" ref-type="bibr">Maridet et al., 2015</xref> implied that the age of Builstyn Khudag is younger than the age proposed by <xref rid="bib0055" ref-type="bibr">Daxner-Höck et al. (2013)</xref>; i.e., approximately from the Latest Bahean (<italic>sensu</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0460" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2013</xref>; ca MN11/12, Late Tortonian). This age estimation is in my view more plausible and in better accordance with the recorded <italic>Ochotona</italic> phenotype.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0380">
                     <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic> from the early Late Miocene (early MN10) locality of Kalfa represents the oldest record of <italic>Ochotona</italic> in Europe (<italic>contra</italic>
                     <xref rid="bib0140" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva et al., 2015</xref>: 21; cf. <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Čermák, 2010</xref> and “Material and methods” above). Kalfa seems to be coeval with Sinap Tepe — Loc. 84 (type locality of <italic>O. ozansoyi</italic>). Among the Chinese localities, following <xref rid="bib0435" ref-type="bibr">Wang et al. (2013)</xref>, the age of locality under study seems to be comparable with Shengou and lower part (Unit/Biozone BH1) of Bahe Fm., thus younger than Amuwusu and simultaneously older than the Late Bahean <italic>Ochotona</italic> bearing localities Huitenghe and Shala (<xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Qiu and Wang, 1999</xref>, <xref rid="bib0305" ref-type="bibr">Qiu Z.-D. et al., 2013</xref> and <xref rid="bib0310" ref-type="bibr">Qiu et al., 2006</xref>).</p>
               </sec>
            </sec>
            <sec id="sec0050">
               <label>5.2.2</label>
               <title id="sect0070">Taxonomy and phylogeny</title>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0385">
                     <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson (1961)</xref> proposed <italic>Bellatona</italic> as a plausible direct ancestor for <italic>Ochotona</italic> and <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> as an ancestor for <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>. <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> hypothesize a successive linear evolutionary relationship of <italic>Bellatona</italic>–<italic>Bellatonoides</italic>–<italic>Ochotona</italic>; in their view <italic>Ochotona</italic> may have originated directly from <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>. The available findings of this group share the same general dental morphology with a successive development of p3 anteroconid, p3 proto- and paraflexid, and posterior process of M2 posteroloph. The successive linear evolutionary relationship seems to be supported by the time sequence of the phenotype appearances in Asian localities Tunggur (Tairum Nor–Moergen–Tamquin)/Amuwusu–Sinap Tepe (8A, 120)/Bahe–Shenghou; i.e. typical <italic>Bellatona</italic> is recorded from the Early Tunggurian (MN6) and its LAD seems to be in the Late Tunggurian (late MN7–8), the morphologically transitional forms between a typical <italic>Bellatona</italic> and <italic>Ochotona</italic> are recorded around the Tunggurian/Bahean boundary (MN7–8/MN9), and the clear <italic>Ochotona</italic> is early Bahean (latest MN9) [<xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson, 1961</xref>, <xref rid="bib0300" ref-type="bibr">Qiu and Wang, 1999</xref> and <xref rid="bib0460" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2013</xref>]. Nevertheless, the fragmentary nature of the still relatively scanty fossil material, occurring mostly as isolated teeth, and the lack of its detailed analyses and comparisons prevent any conclusive statements. There is still a disagreement in the generic attribution of findings morphologically intermediate between <italic>Bellatona</italic> and <italic>Ochotona</italic>. Based on the revision of the type material described by <xref rid="bib0355" ref-type="bibr">Sen (2003)</xref> and the data presented here, I am not able to provide at present a conclusive argument to reinforce or undermine the taxonomic model with <italic>Bellatonoides</italic> as a distinct genus. Nevertheless, considering all the available data, including the palaeobiogeographic context and the age of Sinap Tepe localities 8A and 120, I propose here to retain for the moment the original concept of <italic>Bellatonoides</italic> as a distinct genus.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0390">The recently published work by <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> provides the first detailed description of ochotonine phenotype from the time period critical for the origination of <italic>Ochotona.</italic> On the other hand, the extensive material of DM01 dated to the middle MN7–8 (12.1 Ma; <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al., 2015</xref>) complicates the above phylogenetic scenario. <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> recognize all three genera at DM01; <italic>Bellatona</italic> cf. <italic>B.</italic> <italic>forsythmajori</italic>, <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic>, and <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli.</italic> Inferring from measurements given in the study, there are no significant metric differences in p3 size among these taxa (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>). The published tooth sample contains p3s with undoubted <italic>Ochotona</italic> phenotype (cf. <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref>: fig. 2G–K). On the other hand, the majority (42 of 48) of the specimens attributed to <italic>Bellatona</italic> do not show features characteristic of the nominal taxon of <italic>Bellatona</italic> described by <xref rid="bib0065" ref-type="bibr">Dawson (1961)</xref> from Tairum Nor. They possess a very long narrow protoflexid (<xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref>: fig. 2B, C); i.e., a considerably derived structure very atypical for this taxon, particularly at such high frequency. In comparison with p3s of <italic>Bellatona</italic> species, those of <italic>Bellatona</italic> cf. <italic>B. forsythmajori</italic> from DM01 also exhibit a different L/W ratio, implying a longer anteroconid part of p3, corresponding rather to the condition in <italic>Ochotona</italic> (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>). The features available in p3s from DM01 attributed to <italic>Bellatonoides eroli</italic> are compatible with the diagnosis of <italic>Bellatonoides</italic> by Sen (2003: 166), but the specimens differ from the nominal species from Sinap Tepe in their smaller average size (<xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>), less slender p3 anteroconid, and wider p3 antero-posteroconid connection. Nevertheless, the morphology of the specimen figured in Zhang et al. (2012: fig. 2F) is attributable to <italic>Ochotona</italic>, morphologically similar to the Kalfa form. Unfortunately, the root sides of remaining specimens with shortened anteroconid (Zhang et al. [2012: fig. 2D–E]) were not described/figured to exclude a possibility of them representing sub-adults; cf. the condition in Kalfa p3 in <xref rid="fig0015" ref-type="fig">Fig. 3</xref>N–N′.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0395">The p3 of <italic>Ochotona</italic> cf. <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> from DM01 expresses the general morphology of <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> from Ertemte and Harr Obo (<xref rid="bib0290" ref-type="bibr">Qiu, 1987</xref> and <xref rid="bib0340" ref-type="bibr">Schlosser, 1924</xref>), but it is smaller (of intermediate size between <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> and <italic>O.</italic> <italic>birgerbohlini</italic>, <xref rid="fig0025" ref-type="fig">Fig. 5</xref>) and has a higher tendency to buccal enlargement of p3 anteroconid, though not as high as in the Kalfa form. Such an advanced p3 phenotype is very surprising for a locality of this age and a close affinity to <italic>O.</italic> <italic>lagreli</italic> seems to be very unlikely, thus <italic>Ochotona</italic> from DM01 is tentatively referred to here as <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp. This is also the case for <italic>Ochotona</italic> from Builstyn Khudag in the Valley of Lake and the material with only two p3s described by <xref rid="bib0125" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva (2003)</xref> is tentatively referred here also as <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0400">Unfortunately, the stratigraphic provenance of particular specimens in DM01 is unclear from the published data (cf. <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al., 2015</xref> and <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al., 2012</xref>). <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012</xref>: 209) admit a secondary depositional process and mixture of fossils from different horizons, but exclude this as a great factor and the material as a whole attributed to horizon DM01. The age of sedimentation is fixed with the chron C5An.1n, i.e. at 12.014–12.116 Ma (<xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al., 2015</xref>). Taking into account the available Tunggurian–Bahean record, the phenotype of available rootless ochotonids from DM01 implies either (i) fossil material originating from a longer period of time (i.e. a mixture of fossils from different horizons) with possible presence of more than one species belonging to one (or more [in my view less probable]) evolutionary lineage(s) or (ii) fossil material originating from a relatively short period of time, but in that case, a presence of three species of one clade is very unlikely. Unfortunately, isolated teeth from DM01 in themselves, with their unsure stratigraphic provenance and/or without additional discriminative parameters in other body parts, do not allow a decision between these alternative variants. At any rate, a mosaic pattern of p3 characters distributed in various proportions within a clade with a successive selection of morphotypes leading to a dominance of selected phenotypes characteristic for particular taxa can be assumed. Thus, if we hypothesize the presence of three successive taxa in DM01, then within the above limits, an unequivocal division into distinct species/genera is impossible. The material also does not show the successive linear evolutionary lineage <italic>Bellatona</italic>–<italic>Bellatonoides</italic>–<italic>Ochotona</italic>. In this context, the locality DM02 dated to the earliest Late Miocene (ca 11.6 Ma, <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al., 2015</xref>), i.e. at about 0.5 Myr younger than DM01, seems to be very promising. Its fossil ochotonines referred by <xref rid="bib0185" ref-type="bibr">Kaakinen et al. (2015)</xref> to <italic>Bellatona forsythmajori</italic> and <italic>Ochotona</italic> sp. indet. (but surprisingly without <italic>Bellatonoides</italic>) may shed some light on the still poorly understood early evolution of Ochotoninae.</p>
               </sec>
               <sec>
                  <p id="par0405">A more conclusive evaluation of the phylogenetic relationships of <italic>Ochotona</italic> from Kalfa with other relevant species discussed in this paper is still impossible. With the exception of <xref rid="bib0465" ref-type="bibr">Zhang et al. (2012)</xref> there is a lack of detailed up-to-date studies dealing with the earliest Ochotoninae. The tendency to lateral displacement of p3 anteronid documented in taxa from Damiao – DM01, Sinap Tepe – Locs. 8A, 120, and Kalfa may indicate a phylogenetic closeness. This feature has not yet been documented in later European taxa of <italic>Ochotona</italic> recorded from the Late Miocene (MN11–13) of the peri-Paratethyan area (cf. <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Čermák, 2010</xref> and data herein). Undoubted <italic>Ochotona</italic> findings recorded from DM01, Sinap Tepe (Loc. 84), and Kalfa demonstrate the occurrence of suprisingly advanced p3 phenotype already in the pre-Vallesian (pre-Bahean, pre-MN9) of the Far East Asia and in the pre-Turolian of the peri-Paratethyan area of Europe.</p>

         <title id="sect0075">Conclusions</title>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0410">I revised the original ochotonid material from the early Late Miocene Kalfa locality (Moldova) described by <xref rid="bib0230" ref-type="bibr">Lungu (1981)</xref> as “<italic>Proochotona</italic>” <italic>kalfense</italic>. The taxonomic analysis of this taxon was supported by a direct examination of type materials of <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic>, <italic>B.</italic> <italic>eroli</italic>, and <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ozansoyi</italic>, the relevant Late Miocene ochotonines of the peri-Paratethyan area.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0415">Based on the p3 features in the holotype of <italic>P.</italic> <italic>eximia</italic> (the type species of the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>), the species <italic>eximia</italic> undoubtedly belongs to <italic>Ochotona</italic>. Therefore, the genus <italic>Proochotona</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0190" ref-type="bibr">Khomenko, 1914</xref> is regarded here as a junior subjective synonym of the genus <italic>Ochotona</italic>
               <xref rid="bib0205" ref-type="bibr">Link, 1795</xref>. The morphometric analyses of the material from Kalfa confirm the taxonomic validity of the species <italic>kalfense</italic>. Its p3 features are also typical and discriminative for <italic>Ochotona</italic> [cf. the emended generic diagnosis given by <xref rid="bib0115" ref-type="bibr">Erbajeva (1988</xref>: 82; cf. <xref rid="bib0165" ref-type="bibr">Gureev, 1964</xref>: 226, <xref rid="bib0160" ref-type="bibr">Gromov and Erbajeva, 1995</xref>: 34–35)], and thus the species <italic>kalfense</italic> is referred here to that genus<italic>.</italic> Considering all the available data, I propose here, following <xref rid="bib0040" ref-type="bibr">Čermák (2010)</xref>, to retain for now the original concept of <italic>Bellatonoides</italic> as a distinct genus.</p>
         </sec>
         <sec>
            <p id="par0420">
               <italic>O.</italic> <italic>kalfense</italic> from the early Late Miocene (early MN10) locality of Kalfa represents the oldest record of <italic>Ochotona</italic> in Europe; it seems to be coeval with <italic>O.</italic> <italic>ozansoyi</italic> described from Sinap Tepe (loc. 84). These species demonstrate the occurrence of suprisingly advanced p3 phenotype already in the pre-Turolian of the peri-Paratethyan area. Among the Chinese localities, the age of Kalfa seems to be comparable with Shengou and lower part (Unit/Biozone BH1) of Bahe Fm., thus younger than Amuwusu and older than the Late Bahean <italic>Ochotona</italic> bearing localities Huitenghe and Shala. The material under study is attributed here to the subfamily Ochotoninae; the monophyletic lineage derived from <italic>Bellatona</italic>. A more conclusive evaluation of phylogenetic relationships of <italic>Ochotona</italic> from Kalfa to other relevant species of the clade discussed in this paper is still impossible. Nevertheless, the lateral displacement of p3 anteroconid documented in taxa from Damiao (DM01), Sinap Tepe (Locs. 8A, 120), and Kalfa may indicate a phylogenetic closeness. This feature has not yet been documented in later European taxa of <italic>Ochotona</italic> recorded from the Late Miocene (MN11–13) of the peri-Paratethyan area.</p>
